An Ormond Beach man — and current corrections officer in Volusia County — was arrested Tuesday after deputies said he molested a young girl several years ago at the day care he and his wife ran out of their home.

  • Accused of molesting a girl at a day care he ran with his wife
  • Investigators are looking for more victims

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said David Darin Bugno, 49, was arrested without incident and charged with lewd or lascivious molestation.

Deputies said Bugno and his wife, who ran the day care, have since divorced and the day care is no longer in business.

Investigators said they were alerted to the case in April 2015 after a girl told her mother about the abuse. The girl, who is now 9 years old, told deputies Bugno touched her private parts and showed her pornographic videos when she was at Bugno Daycare between 2008 and 2010.

At the time, the girl would have been between the ages of 1 and 4.

The day care is closed now, but once operated in the Plantation Pines neighborhood off State Road 40 near Ormond Beach.

Investigators said the victim's mother told them she thought she could trust Bugno because he was a corrections officer at Tomoka Correctional Institution in Daytona Beach.

“He was in a position of authority. He was a corrections officer, she thought that he was trustworthy," explained Volusia County Sheriff's Office spokesman Andrew Gant.

George Wilson lives down the street from Bugno. He can’t believe what Bugno is accused of.

“I’m really surprised about Dave. I’ve known Dave about 10, 12 years and he’s always been that standup guy. I’ve helped him do work at his house," said Wilson.

“I would never picture Dave putting himself in that position, knowing the position he’s in, a jail guard and the consequences that would come with that," Wilson added.

Investigators want to remind parents that people may seem good but you should always be careful.

“Parents need to educate their kids about what’s a good touch, what’s a bad touch and make sure their kids are comfortable coming to them when something bad has happened to them," Gant said.

Investigators are asking anyone who believes they have information about this case, or knows of other victims at Bugno Daycare, to call the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office at 386-254-1537.
