Students at Bethune-Cookman University gathered on campus for a candlelight vigil Saturday night to honor a former football player who died in a shooting.

Eric Hood is a B-CU football player and was friends with 23-year-old Don’Kevious Johnson.

“He was always smiling, cracking jokes, a good guy. It’s sad that it happened like that,” Hood said of Johnson, who was a Wildcats football player in 2014, according to the university.

“I’ve seen a couple of players; they’re actually holding up pretty well." he said. "They’re actually handling it better than I thought, so I really commend them guys for that.”

Lamont Postell, the suspected gunman in the shooting just after 1 a.m. Saturday, surrendered to Daytona Beach Police less than 24 hours later. Police said he shot and killed Johnson and wounded two other people, who are expected to survive.

Police said Postell and Johnson got into a fight inside the Indigo Lakes Golf Club. Witnesses told police they later saw Postell pull out a gun and shoot Johnson in the head. Justine Cunningham, a bystander, was also shot. Another victim, Tre Williams, was shot in the back. As of Saturday night, one had been released from the hospital, the university said.

“I don’t know all of the circumstances on what transpired with him pulling a gun, but anytime you have gun violence, it’s good to get them off of the streets,” said Jimmie Flynt of the Daytona Beach Police Department.

Police said Postell is not a student at the university. He faces a first-degree murder charge, along with two counts of attempted murder.

“Usually on Saturday everyone is out mingling, kind of catching up, but I feel today, it’s like a ghost town," Hood said.

Detectives are still in the process of interviewing witnesses.
