Fred continues to weaken well out in the Atlantic. This storm will likely be downgraded to a tropical depression at some point later Thursday or early Friday. The track is turning north due to an approaching front and will never get close to the United States.

Another tropical wave about to move off the African coast has a medium chance for tropical development in the next five days.

Discussion and 48-hour outlook

At 11 p.m. EDT, the center of Tropical Storm Fred was located near latitude 22.0 north, longitude 36.5 west.

Fred is moving toward the west-northwest near 12 mph, and this motion is expected to continue through early Saturday. A turn toward the northwest and a decrease in forward speed is forecast by late Saturday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph, with higher gusts. Weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours and Fred is forecast to become a remnant low on Friday.

Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 70 miles from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1,005 mb (29.68 inches).
