The city hall in St. Cloud was packed inside and out with people opposing a proposed fire fee hike.

Residents and business owners have been protesting this fee for weeks. And in the end they got their wish: the city council voted against the plan.

Over 100 people showed up Thursday to speak. Each of them had three minutes to speak to the city council about why they don’t want this tax.

Many homeowners in the city did not want it because it could raise their fire fee from $36 to $186 a year.

The payment is something that many people said they can’t afford.

“I’m sick of it,” said one resident. “I’m sick of having my pocket pinched for you and your mismanagement funds and that is the bottom line. If anyone votes yes for this, pack your bags because we are going to vote you out.”

But Councilmember Dave Askew said the money from the fire fee would help build a new fire station.

Fire station number 33 is currently located in a trailer.
